Quchan Kurd rug from north east Persia (Iran)

Age: circa 1890

Size: 7′.5″x5′.7″ (226×170 cm) with the flatwoven ends

The madder red field displays two columns each of three octagonal quartered Gulli Guls,with secondary serrated diamonds and tertiary stars scattered about.Each Gul has a barber pole edging and is differently colored and display tiny diamonds and leaves.There are further interesting elements scattered in the field.The main border shows a compartmentalized star-in-octagon repeating pattern.The stars are separated by barber poles and a few S panels.The inner borders show either colorful reciprocal triangles or mosaic zigzags.The outer honey colored border supports chains of boxes.There are four narrow barber pole lines in the border system.The broad wool selvedges are original and intact.At each end is a plainweave band in red and black with extra weft float patterning.The wool is soft and the condition is good.
