Caucasian Rugs

The Caucasian weaving area is located in the mountainous region between the Black and Caspian Seas. There are numerous languages, ethnicities and tribal groups, and this variety has produced an incredible variety of colorful, geometric rugs, carpets and textiles for over 400 years. The antique Caucasian rugs divide into two main groups: the ever-popular high pile Kazaks, Karabaghs and Gendjes to the Southwest. Towards the east is the fine Shirvans and Kubas. Most of the weavings are in scatter sizes or runners, however, the earliest Dragon and Palmette design carpets are in larger gallery formats. The colors are crisp and cheerful, the foundations are usually all wool and the knot is symmetric. The finer knotted Shirvans and Kubas may have cotton wefts.
