Perepedil prayer rug from eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: circa 1870

Size: 5′.2″x4′.3″ (157×130 cm)

This unusual eastern Caucasian collectable rug displays individuality in the prayer format:the red field;the presence of small ewers;an illegible date panel;four strongly stylized humanoid figures and vertical ram’s horns in the spandrels.The niche is  decorated by a band of curled motifs.In addition there are snowflakes,rosettes,birds,diamonds,animals,dragons,lazy S’s and other smaller elements.The dark blue main border shows a Kufesque pattern of rosettes and brackets.There are two secondary borders with colorful striped segments.Inside is an ivory tertiary border with floating stars and within that is a blue innermost meander pattern attached to the niche.The outer frame displays red and green keyhole reciprocals while the outermost band is decorated with black and blue bar motif.There are eight narrow barber pole lines in the border system.All the colors are from natural sources.The rug is in good condition including the ends and sides.SOLD
