Shirvan rug from eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: circa 1870

Size: 4′.10″x2′.11″ (147×89 cm)

The yellow field shows offset rows of geometric palmettes in red,blue,dark brown,ivory and green.There are several diamond shape color samplers as well as dots,hooked elements and lazy S’s.The ivory main border employs colorful floating hooked diamonds in various colors.The outermost minor border shows an unusual double ram’s horn pattern closely related to East Turkestan pieces.The inner minor border hosts a keyhole reciprocal in red and blue.All the colors are from natural sources.The wool is soft and the rug is in good condition including the braided ends.
