Shirvan rug from eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

The navy ground displays three very large hooked octagonal medallions in red and ivory,each centered by a sixteen point Crivelli star in:yellow,navy,red,rose,blue and aubergine.Crivelli was an Italian Renaissance painter who frequently employed this motif.There are small stars,lazy S’s,small rosettes and red and white octagons supporting the major pattern.The ivory main border features the classic crab pattern,and the innermost band displays a red and rose Zeikhour style band design.The flanking blue minor borders host red triangle and bar motif.There are five bitonal barber pole lines in the border system.The handle is soft and pliable.At each end is a narrow soumak strip followed by a warp macrame band.All the colors are from natural sources.The piece is in good condition.SOLD
