Shahsavan piled bag from north west Persia (Iran)
Age: circa 1870
Size: 1′.8″x1′.10″ (51×56 cm)
The red field displays a giant green and ivory Memling Gul centered by a red hooked diamond,and four small animals in the corners.There is a red and blue barber pole surrounding the medallion.The red main border shows geometric rosettes alternating with squares in various colors.The square motif is repeated in miniature on both of the flanking minor borders on an abrashed blue ground.There are three red and white and one black and white narrow barber pole lines in the border system.At the top end the narrow flatweave is folded under.There is a thick red and blue weft float chain stitch at the top end.All the colors are from natural sources,.The piece is in good condition except for three sides need attention and the field minor repiling.
