Sewan Kazak rug from southwest Caucasus,Armenia

Age: circa 1890

Size: 7′.0″x6′.0″ (213×183 cm)

The green winged shield has an ivory surround,and is centered by a red cartouche color matched to the field.There are colorful tree like shapes developing from each wing.Most of the medallion is surrounded by colorful hooks and these are repeated in the medallion.At each end of the field are rosettes and hooked elements.Further,there are pendants,stars,boxes and tiny diamonds in the field.The ivory main border displays polychrome bug like palmettes.The identical blue minor borders display colorful diamonds.There are two red and ivory and two red and yellow barber pole lines in the border system.The red wool selvedges are original and intact.At the top and bottom are narrow red flatwoven finishes.The rug is particularly square for the type.All the colors are from natural sources.The piece is in good pile and condition.SOLD
