Sewan Kazak rug from Armenia,southwest Caucasus
Age: dated: 1271=1854
Size: 7′.5″x5′.7″ (226×170 cm)
The bold design shows a green/red figure-ground reversing pattern with a characteristic Sewan cruciform center enclosing red and ivory submedallions,of which the smaller is doubly dated 1271.Surrounding them are:small boxes,hooked and quartered diamonds,stars,lazy S”s,rosettes,dotted bars and numerous curved ram’s horn motifs.The ivory periphery displays a disconnected S pattern.There are triangular dark blue panels with small diamonds and triangular fillers with tiny square mosaics in the Karatchoph Kazak manner.Among the detail colors are:bottle green,red,blue,yellow and aubergine.The dark brown main border alternates cartouches enclosing pinwheel rosettes with angular ram’s horn separators.Flanking are two ivory meander design bands and four dotted two tone barber pole lines.All the colors are from natural sources.The blue selvedges are intact and the rug is in good condition.SOLD
