Moghan prayer rug from south Caucasus

Age: circa 1870

Size: 4′.9″x3′.1″ (145×94 cm)

The ivory field displays a close tile work of 6×3 octagons in the coat pattern in red,burgundy,navy,camel,light blue and dark blue.Tightly fitted in are diamond shaped color samplers throughout.In the faceted niche is a red rectangle with doubly hook anchor extenders.Similar motifs are present in the spandrels.There are two small animals as well in the spandrel section.The red main border presents the characteristic slant leaf and chalice design and is flanked by an outer navy rosette and Z border and an inner blue and burgundy keyhole reciprocal border.There are three black and white barber pole lines in the border system.All the colors are from natural sources.The piece is in good condition.
