Milas rug (87) – SOLD
Milas rug from south west Anatolia (Turkey)
Age: circa 1880
Size: 5′.7″x3′.9″ (170×114 cm)
In the lower half of the red field are two extremely tall fringed botehs, set above carnations, and topped by four short leaves. At the end of the field is a large oblique lobbed leaf and another fringed boteh. The main ivory border is ultimately derived from classical Oushak carpets and displays a meander enclosing small geometric devices. The innermost border abrashes from aubergine to blue and to green, while decorated by a meander with small flowers and flanked by triangle reciprocals. The wide dark brown border hosts carnations and tulips in several colors and the outermost band presents plantal form in various colors and appears only on three sides,an irregularity sought after by connoisseurs.Another irregularity is seen in incomplete barber pole lines. At each end is a wide red flatweave strip followed by a macrame warp band. The handle is meaty and soft. All the colors are from natural sources. The condition of this piece is good.SOLD
