Pair of Khamseh saddle bags with original backs and loops from south west Persia (Iran)
Age: circa 1890
Size: 9′.5"x2′.3" (287×69 cm)
Each face has a dark blue ground centered by a red lozenge medallion which is fringed by ivory latch hooks.Around each field are four lovely birds,lazy S’s,rosettes and smaller geometric devices.The unusual ivory main border features a stylized flower pattern.The flanking red minor borders all have stylized boteh designs.On three sides of each back is a pile section with colorful diagonal stripes in navy,yellow,red,blue,ivory and burgundy.At each end the closure strips are decorated in colorful soumak patterns and are flanked by weft float ivory and navy square motifs.These motifs are repeated in the bridge between bags.The original dark blue loops are intact.The handle is soft and pliable.The piece has four different weaving techniques:pile;kilim;cicim and chain stitch.All the colors are from natural sources.The piece is in good condition except for the multicolor stripes having some wear.SOLD
