Ivory ground Kazak prayer rug from southwest Caucasus.

This unusual Kazak prayer rug is a close rendition of a pattern seen in antique Shirvan prayer rugs from eastern Caucasus.The ivory field employs close distribution of multicolor stylized flowers beneath a free floating dark blue notched mihrab arch and colorful triangles.In the spandrels are two green hands and two illegible dates,along with additional flowers and a fractional bird.The madder red main border has a design of barred S’s derived from Shirvan rugs,and is flanked by dark blue and green minor borders with flower and cross motifs.There are four two tone barber pole narrow lines in red and yellow and red and ivory.One of the inner barber pole lines turn to red and blue at the upper end.The pile is particularly high and lush.The selvedges are colorful and banded in pile colors.The handle is soft and meaty.All the colors are from natural sources.The condition of this great collectable rug is very good.

Red color comes from the root of the madder plant,blue from indigo plant,yellow from larkspur or weld,green is the double dye of larkspur and indigo,ivory is natural sheep wool,black from tannin or oak tree galls or iron, brown from oak bark or tree galls.Some weavers used black sheep wool for brown or black colors.SOLD
