Karatchoph Kazak rug from Armenia, southwest Caucasus
Age: circa 1870
Size: 6′.0"x5′.1" (183×155 cm)
The rare green field design displays the classic ivory octagonal Karatchoph medallion enclosing a large red central square and four smaller dark blue panels with paired hooks and S’s decorating the motif.Unusually the checkerboard panel extends beyond the sides of the octagon. The ivory star filled boxes are unusual:at the top end they are only two stars high and three boxes show fractional stars. In addition there are several humanoid figures,a jewelry pendant, red panels with hooked devices,an animal, hooked X’s, and lazy S’s.The ivory main border shows a repeating modular pattern of four converging arrows in various colors. There are two flanking minor borders, both with red and ivory reciprocal triangles and four diagonal barber pole lines. All the colors are from natural and vegetable sources. At the top end there is a reduction of borders. The piece is in acceptable condition.Despite the condition this piece is very collectable.SOLD
