Karagashli rug from Kuba district,eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: circa 1870

Size: 6′.11″x3′.10″ (211×117 cm)

The well saturated navy ground displays the characteristic Karagashli tripartite pole medallion of stepped and connected hexagons with red sunburst finials.There are details in blue and yellow.There are secondary elements in the field including animals,knots,snowflakes and octagons.The bottom light blue medallion has two yellow animals.The abrashed yellow main border displays iconic interlocking pattern.The flanking minor borders in dark brown both show colorful rosettes,and there are two tertiary ivory borders with geometric S’s.There are five narrow barber pole lines of which the outermost doesn’t complete across the bottom end,a desirable detail for connoisseurs.At each end is a blue flatwoven band followed by a delicate warp net.The medium blue cotton selvedges are original.All the colors are from natural and vegetable sources.The handle is soft and pliable.The condition of this great piece is good.SOLD
