Gendje long rug from southern Caucasus

Age: circa 1875

Size: 7′.0″x4′.1″ (213×124 cm)

This south Caucasian rug shows classic Gendje pattern of diagonal stripes in shades of red,shades of blue,ivory,green and black in addition to a vibrant yellow.The stripes are uniformly patterned with palmettes with star like flowers.The tertiary decor includes lazy S’s and diamonds.The unusual ivory main border shows hooked motifs separated by stylized crosses in various colors.The inner secondary border displays a keyhole reciprocal in red and green.The outer minor border hosts reciprocal triangles in red and blue.There are four barber pole lines in the border system.The wool is exceptionally soft and lush and has taken the dyes extremely well.The red and blue selvedges are original and intact.All the colors are from natural sources.The handle is meaty and chunky.The piece is in good pile and condition.
