Daghestan prayer rug from eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea
Age: circa 1870
Size: 5′.0″x3′.7″ (152×109 cm)
The ivory ground features a strongly serrated leaf lattice enclosing multiple colorful flowers.The faceted niche arch shelters a hooked pentagon.In each corner is a hexagon with vertical extenders.There are combs,ewers,pendants,diamonds,two illegible dates in the spandrels,an animal,diamonds and interesting elements along the edges of the ivory field.The tomato red main border shows a barred S pattern.There is an outer dark brown minor border with stylized rosettes,a navy inner border with crossed X’s and rosettes,a quincunx line,an innermost bitonal keyhole reciprocal and three black and white barber pole lines in the border system.The colors are well saturated and the quality is superb.At each end is a beige kilim strip.All the colors are from natural sources.The piece is in good condition.
