Bordjalou prayer Kazak rug from southwest Caucasus

Age: dated 1299=1882

Size: 5′.9″x3′.5″ (175×104 cm)

This longer than classic southwest Caucasian prayer rug shows a characteristic madder red field with a squared re-entrant below and a faceted niche above.There are two hexagonal navy and red cartouches,two fringed diamonds in green and navy,three yellow and white rosettes below and two yellow in the spandrels and two ivory ewers.The doubled main borders show an inner complex reciprocal in ivory and black,and an outer red and green.The innermost border hosts a zigzag in red and green.There are six red and white barber pole lines and four solid navy lines in the border system.At the top end is a red flatwoven band sewn over.All the colors are from natural sources.The piece is in good condition.
