Alpan Kuba long rug from Kuba district,eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: circa 1870

Size: 8′.9″x3′.5″ (267×104 cm)

Unusually for this type of Kuba the Alpan pattern repeats five complete times along with two partials in red and yellow.The navy field shows diagonal cartouches in various colors and there are tertiary lazy S’s,rosettes,diamonds,combs,arrows,X’s,and other smaller elements.There are three borders,of which the widest displays a Zeikhour  light blue and ivory wave pattern;the middle one is red with floating stylized S’s;and the ivory innermost features rosettes and a faceted meander.There are four barber pole lines in the border system.The navy selvedges are intact and original and at each end is a narrow dark blue soumak band followed by the remains of a knotted warp net.All the colors are crystal clear and from natural sources.The condition of this high end collectable piece is good including the original ends and sides.SOLD
