Akstafa prayer rug from southeast Caucasus

Age: circa 1870

Size: 6′.7″x3′.4″ ( 201×102 cm)

The navy field shows six stacked hooked octagons edged by a pattern of zig zag stripes.The lower corners have additional stripes and there are triangular side fillers in the field.In addition there are small animals,tiny cruciforms,diamonds,and other geometric elements.Within the stepped ivory arch is a comb,two animals,rosettes and a barber pole pattern.There are two tree of life design motifs and additional animals in the spandrels.The old ivory main border has the iconic Akstafa anchor design and is flanked by red minor borders with ribbon patterns.The wool is soft and the weave is moderately fine.All the colors are from natural sources.The rug is in good condition.SOLD
