Akstafa prayer rug from southeast Caucasus

Age: circa 1885

Measurements: 6′.4″x3′.6″ (193×107 cm)

This exceptionally big Akstafa prayer rug displays the iconic sawtooth hexagonal lattice with a multitude of various types of hooked lozenges,octagons,filler rosettes and other geometric devices,set beneath a square shouldered mihrab arch containing additional rosettes and a comb,all on a dark blue ground.The pattern,without the lattice,continues into the spandrels.The ivory main border is ornamented with hooked motifs in a variety of colors including lime green,light blue,apricot and rust.There are two barber pole lines in red and green and red and blue.All the colors are from natural and vegetable sources.The rug is in good condition in general except for the selvedges and a few creases which are being restored professionally.SOLD
