Avar rug from Daghestan area,eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Size: 5′.2″x3′.1″ (157×94 cm)

The navy field displays three large medallions in red and blue with cross and diamond centers.In each medallion are four unusual L shaped elements.There are eight secondary yellow boxes in the field,of which four have barber pole surrounds.There are eight quincunxes in the central medallion and two rosettes in the field.A yellow sawtooth edges the field.The red main border hosts connected navy /camel hexagons enclosing cartouches,further there are small colorful boxes spread around the main border.There are two blue solid lines in the border system.The ends show flatwoven strips and the remains of knotted warp net.The weave is moderate and the colors are vivid.The piece is in good condition except for some low pile spots and a bottom right corner chip.
