Shahsavan soumak bag from Moghan Savalan area,northwest Persia
Age: circa 1825
Size: 1′.11″x1′.10″ (58×56 cm)
This piece belongs to a special group of Shahsavan soumak bags which is sought after by connoisseurs.,The ivory field shows a central ivory octogram,which in turn,displays a focal octagon with palmette extenders.In the corners are four burnt orange octagons with hooked motifs.There are numerous small animals flanking main medallion.The madder red main border show iconic reversing birds and anchor diamonds.The ivory minor borders feature double chains of diamonds in various colors.All the colors are from natural and vegetable sources.The weave is extremely tight and the condition is good except for some minor loose edging visible from the picture.
