Pair of Veramin bags from north central Persia (Iran)

Age: circa 1880

Measurements: 1′.10"x2′.1" and 1′.10"x2′.3" (56×63 and 56×69 cm)

Although these extremely rare Veramin saddle bags were made as a pair they are radically different in execution.The lighter colored of the two is more  expressionistically drawn whereas the other,darker pendant is more precisely rendered.Each face displays a roughly drawn Turkmen type gul in ivory,navy,red and green on a dark blue panel.Around each gul are four flowers.The main borders are patterned with an irregular geometric version of undulating vine.The red outer borders of each bag have a zig-zag line enclosing stylized buds and the inner minors have dot patterns.The colorful closure tabs are intact and there are herringbone weft float pattern strips below and soumak wrapped lines above.The handle is chunky and pliable.All the colors are from natural sources.The bags are in good pile and condition except for the top one having a small hole and the bottom one missing a few lines at one end.
