Talish rug from southern Caucasus

Age: circa 1870

Size: 7′.11″x3′.3″ (241 x 99 cm)

The royal blue field displays seven full width hooked diamonds and associated half motif fillers.The colors include:ivory,yellow,aubergine,shades of red,shades of blue and dark brown.There is a partial barber pole line around the outer edge of the field.The unusual ivory main border alternates knot rosettes with quincunxes of smaller squares.Similar small squares appear in the inner and outer minor borders.There is an outermost keyhole reciprocal in blue and dark brown surrounds the whole.There are five red and four plain blue ground lines in the border system.As is characteristic of Talish long rugs the selvedge is broadly banded in pile colors.The handle is soft and pliable.All the colors are from natural sources.The piece is in good pile and condition except for some wear in the field and edging problems.The piece is being restored professionally.
