Shirvan rug from eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: circa 1870

Size: 4′.11″x3′.5″ (150×104 cm)

The double headed medallion presents a central square enclosing a red octagon with smaller ivory octagons above and below.In addition there are rosettes,small flowers,lazy S’s,diamonds and rosettes in the medallion.There are eight triangular motifs supporting the medallion.The complex border system shows a red main stripe with colorful barred S’s, black minor borders with colorful rosettes and two ivory tertiary borders with anchor like flowers.Edging and merging with the field is a mosaic pattern of small diamonds.There are five narrow barber pole lines in the border system.All the colors are from natural sources.The handle is soft and the condition is good.
