Shirvan rug from eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: circa 1870

Size: 5′.6″x3′.10″ (168×117 cm)

The navy field features offset rows of polychrome palmettes,while quincunxes and lazy S’s fill in.At each field end are rows of colorful tiny triangles.The field colors include :shades of red,shades of blue,camel,ivory,yellow and green.The unusual red Kufic border displays ivory brackets and knots.The flanking minor borders show colorful mosaic pattern oblique stripes.There are four barber pole lines in the border system.At each end is a narrow beige flatwoven strip followed by a knotted warp net.The handle is soft and pliable.All the colors are from natural sources.The piece is in good condition except for some side cord issues.
