Shirvan rug from eastern Caucasus

Age: circa 1870

Measurements: 3′.10"x2′.11" (117×89 cm)

The field pattern of colorful Memling Guls in a rectangular lattice is arranged in the following manner:vertically seven complete panels flanked by an equal number of half panels to the right and left.Among the main colors are ivory,red,burnt orange,green,blue,brown,camel and yellow.The ivory main border,in the Akstafa manner,displays squares ending in ram’s horns and centered by polychrome rosettes.In addition there are tiny diamonds and other geometric devices scattered about.The minor border is set on the outside and has lozenges and triangular fillers on a black ground.There are three ivory and black barber pole lines en suite with the dividers in the field.In addition there is a red and blue barber pole line framing the center.There is a keyhole reciprocal outermost minor border in red and blue.At the end finishes there are soumak and kilim technique strips.All the colors are from natural sources.This charming small rug is in good condition.SOLD
