Shirvan rug from eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea
Age: circa 1870
Dimensions: 4′.8″x3′.5″ (142×104 cm)
The old ivory field displays a unidirectional palmette and lattice design.Along the edges of the field are colorful sawtooth triangles and a light scatter fill of small geometric elements.The initial row of the field is drawn in a somewhat different manner from the rest of the field.The royal blue main border has a bold,colorful version of the classic Caucasian crab pattern in various colors.The keyhole reciprocal minor borders are in red and blue abrashing to green.There are two black and white barber pole lines and two solid blue lines.The ivory wool kilim ends are intact as are the knotted nets terminating the rug.The weft is white and light brown mixed.All the colors are from natural,vegetable sources.The rug is in very good pile and condition.
