Perepedil rug from eastern Caucasus,Kuba district,west coast of the Caspian Sea
Age: circa 1885
Size: 7′.5"x4′.7" (226×140 cm)
The slightly abrashed dark blue field displays the characteristic allover Perepedil design of ram’s horns,ivory octagons,dragons and swords along with a scatter fill of rosettes,rectangles,cross hatches,lazy S’s and other smaller elements.The red madder main border employs an ivory Kufesque pattern and is flanked by six lesser stripes including:two multicolor striped panel design borders;two with reversing carnations;an innermost ribbon meander;and an outermost red and light green keyhole reciprocals.There are eight bitonal barber pole narrow lines in the border system.At one end are intact tassles while at the other are knotted warps.Both ends display beige flatwoven band.All the colors are from natural sources.The rug is in good condition.
