Marasali prayer rug from Kuba district,eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea
Age: circa 1890
Size: 5′.0″x3′.6″ (152×107 cm)
The navy field displays nested serrated botehs with color sampler interiors.The first and third rows are distincly different with striped colorful inner botehs.Along the sides of the field are small geometric fillers which continue into the spandrels as do the botehs.The ivory faceted niche arch floats freely.At the top of the spandrels are two ivory arrow motifs.Surrounding the field is a serrated line.The ivory main border features floating botehs which simplify at the bottom end and further become plainer along the top.The quincunx side guard lines become multicolor dashes along the ends.The flanking minor borders in navy and red are both decorated with floating stars.There are three bitonal barber pole lines in the border system.At the top end is a narrower ivory strip followed by a wider braided band while the bottom shows a wider flatwoven finish.Both sides have two cord wrap in ivory cotton.The colors are vivid and the piece is in good condition.SOLD
