Luri rug from south west Persia (Iran)
Age: circa 1875
Size: 8′.8″x5′.3″ (264×160 cm)
The navy field is mostly covered by a pole medallion of three large hooked red and blue diamonds,each centered by an ivory rosette knot.On the sides of the field are partial medallions in various colors.The colors include shades of red,shades of blue,shades of green,burgundy,ivory,burnt orange,yellow,dark brown and chocolate.The ivory hooked surrounds enable the eye to move smoothly around the field.Each diamond displays animals,rosettes,diamonds,pendants,lazy S’s and the red ones in addition host small birds.The ivory main border shows rosettes and simple diagonal sawtooth leaves.The outer chocolate border presents stylized botehs in various colors while the inner burnt orange minor border features a red meander with hourglass motif.There is a narrow red and blue triangle reciprocal surrounding the whole.At each end is a pile strip in checkerboard design followed by a flatwoven band.All the colors are from natural sources.The wool is soft and supple.The piece is in good condition.
