Kuba rug from Kuba district,eastern Caucasus

Age: circa 1870

Size: 4′.6″x3′.4″ (137×102 cm)

The rare yellow ground displays an offset column pattern of snowflakes in red,blue,navy and ivory.They are supported by crosshatches in singly or in combination,various diamonds and stylized plant forms.The ivory main border presents slant leaf and chalice design.The outer minor border shows a keyhole reciprocal in red and blue while the inner features reversing carnation on dark brown.Surrounding the edges of the field is a run of colorful small triangles.There are four red and ivory barber pole lines in the border system.The selvedges are intact and the colors are from natural sources.The piece is in good condition except for a small crease on one side.
