Kuba rug from eastern Caucasus,Kuba district,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Size: 4′.11"x3′.10" (150×117 cm)

The madder red field displays a large double keyhole motif with a central rectangular panel.The blue ground displays a central rose rectangle with four hooked leaf motif and a central ivory box.At the corners of the field are yellow triangles enclosing stylized birds.Among the other elements are:hooked hexagons,composite squares,lazy S’s,rosettes,crosses and other smaller devices.Among the medallions an interesting ivory boder with several varieties of hooked bars and other geometric motifs.There are four tiny animals in one octagon with medallion and botehs in the other.The ivory main border displays a colorful,slightly rectangular version of the popular crab pattern and is flanked by dark brown,medium blue and yellow carnations.The innermost ivory border has a lozenge chain motif.In addition there are four narrow barber pole lines present.At each end is a flatwoven finishing.All the colors are from natural sources.The weave is fine and tight.The handle is unusually softer then usual.The piece is in good condition.
