Fachralo Kazak (450)
Fachralo prayer Kazak rug from southwest Caucasus
Age: circa 1875
Size: 4′.6″x3′.8″ (137×112 cm)
The attractively abrashed madder red ground displays an ivory and red nested six point medallion with external and internal blue and green hooks. At the center is a yellow hexagon enclosing a red and black star.At the base of the field are three geometric hooked palmettes, above which are two stepped crosses.Above the medallion are two divider boxes in several colors and in the spandrels are two larger boxes with rosettes.Unusually, there is no lower re-entrant.The elegant yellow mihrab arch is partially edged with a two tone barber pole line.Similar lines appear in the borders,in the center medallion and surrounding the rectangular boxes. The ivory main border shows a reciprocal pattern of double slanted leaf and colorful triangles in red, yellow, green and blue and is flanked by blue and green minor borders with tiny crosses in various colors. The handle of the rug is soft and pliable. All the colors are from natural sources. At the bottom end is a narrow flatwoven strip and intact warp loops. The pile is velvety and the condition is good.
