Akstafa prayer rug from southeast Caucasus

Age: circa 1875

Size: 5′.1″x3′.5″ (155×104 cm)

The navy field shows a complex pattern of fringed hexagons,dramatic arabesque leaves,octagonal rosettes and small animals.Above is a faceted floating ivory niche arch with additional octagons,animals and diamonds in the spandrels.Detail colors include:yellow,red,aubergine,light blue,ivory and green.At each end of the ivory main border are slanted serrated leaves,which repeat on the sides,separated by stylized calyxes.The flanking keyhole reciprocal minor borders are in red and light blue and red and green.There are three bitonal barber pole lines in the border system.All the colors are from natural sources.The rug is in good pile and condition.SOLD
